What is the difference between HBO and WO education?
Zuyd is a University of Applied Sciences (HBO), which means it focuses on practice-based learning. You learn through real-life projects and internships, preparing you directly for a career. That is why a higher education institution is also called a university of applied sciences. This means you not only get theory, but also apply it immediately in practical assignments, individually or in groups.
What does it cost to study in the Netherlands?
Tuition fees for HBO programmes in Holland are around €2,530 per year (for EU students in 2024-2025). In addition, you need to consider rent, living expenses and insurance. On average, a student needs between €800 and €1,200 per month to live and study in Maastricht.
How to find a room?
There are several ways to find a room. Maastricht Housing is a well-known platform where students can rent housing. Facebook groups and international student networks are also useful. Register early as demand is high!
Can I work while studying?
Yes, as an EU citizen you can work freely in the Netherlands. There are many part-time jobs in hospitality, retail, and customer service.
Do I need to speak Dutch to study here?
No, many programmes are fully taught in English. English is widely spoken in Maastricht, especially in shops, cafés and among students. However, learning some basic Dutch can help with daily life and integration.
