Maastricht is a vibrant and welcoming student city. It has a strong international community and a unique charm that sets it apart from other Dutch cities. Whether you enjoy culture, nightlife or relaxing outdoors, there’s always something to do. 

Maastricht is known for its cosy bars with outdoor seating, restaurants and shops. Explore the historic centre, enjoy a coffee at Vrijthof Square, or have lunch by the Meuse River. Want to go out in the evening? There are plenty of bars and clubs where students come together, such as Platielstraat or Bassin. The city also organises regular events and festivals. 

Because Maastricht has many international students, there are several student associations where you can meet new people. Think of ESN Maastricht, especially for international students, or associations focusing on specific interests such as debate, sports or music.

How to study in the Netherlands as a Portuguese student?

  • Orientation

    Choose a programme that truly suits your interests. Zuyd offers several English-taught, professionally oriented programmes, such as Applied Data Science & Artificial Intelligence and European Studies.

  • Check admission requirements

    Most programmes at Zuyd accept international diplomas, including the Portuguese Diploma de Ensino Secundário. Visit the relevant programme page to check for additional requirements, such as proof of English proficiency (IELTS/TOEFL).

  • Apply via Studielink

    Applications for Dutch higher education are submitted via Studielink.nl. For most programmes, the deadline is 1 May, so make sure to apply on time.

  • Make practical arrangements

    Start looking for student accommodation in Maastricht early. Also consider arranging health insurance and researching part-time job options.

Frequently asked questions about studying in the Netherlands as a Portuguese student

What is the difference between HBO and WO education?

Zuyd is a University of Applied Sciences (HBO), which means it focuses on practice-based learning. You learn through real-life projects and internships, preparing you directly for a career. That is why a higher education institution is also called a university of applied sciences. This means you not only get theory, but also apply it immediately in practical assignments, individually or in groups. 

What does it cost to study in the Netherlands? 

Tuition fees for HBO programmes in Holland are around €2,530 per year (for EU students in 2024-2025). In addition, you need to consider rent, living expenses and insurance. On average, a student needs between €800 and €1,200 per month to live and study in Maastricht. 

How to find a room? 

There are several ways to find a room. Maastricht Housing is a well-known platform where students can rent housing. Facebook groups and international student networks are also useful. Register early as demand is high! 

Can I work while studying? 

Yes, as an EU citizen you can work freely in the Netherlands. There are many part-time jobs in hospitality, retail, and customer service.  

Do I need to speak Dutch to study here? 

No, many programmes are fully taught in English. English is widely spoken in Maastricht, especially in shops, cafés and among students. However, learning some basic Dutch can help with daily life and integration.
