The Research Centre for Assistive Technology in Health Care at Zuyd University wants to make an active contribution to innovations in long-term care. Research is being conducted and innovation projects are being carried out in collaboration with health-care institutes, professionals, companies, health-care clients, and clients of knowledge institutes. We then apply the results from the research and innovation projects to education and real-life health care practices.

The Research Centre for Autonomy and Participation in Health Care and Social Welfare performs activities which help to ensure that chronically ill people or frail elderly can live the life they would like.

The Research Centre Data Intelligence explores the world of data and smart technology. We’re constantly finding new ways to apply data in practical solutions that help Limburg and the EU region move forward. Our focus is on projects with a social impact – from smart tools for everyday life to technology that makes a real difference in professional environments. We design and test data-driven innovations, such as intuitive software and technology, supporting people in their personal and working lives.

The Research Centre for Datavisualization focuses on developing, evaluating, and implementing novel ways to interact with data and information. The improvement of the human ability to manage data, extract information, and gain knowledge from it is of vital importance for a society in digitization. Visualization is an effective way to enhance human capabilities to extract and interpret information and support human decision-making.

The Research Centre for Facility Management will perform research into the way in which facility management can contribute to the resolution of social and regional issues relating to two fields, namely care and the quality of life in city districts.

The Future of Food is a topic much debated in the last decade. Its importance and need for direction is evident in the formulated ‘Sustainable Development Goals’ set for 2030 by the United Nations. Twelve out of a total of seventeen of these goals can be attributed to food, from consumer health through nutritious food consumption to the food production process and waste across the food system. We are living in times where the need for change and transformation of our food consumption and supplying sectors is more urgent than ever before. This urgency is particularly visible by examining the impact of the global COVID-19 pandemic which has caused devastating conditions but also sparked new innovations across the food service sector globally. For many stakeholders this has vast consequences, from limiting and adjusting consumption behaviour to closing of businesses and unemployment. As we persevere through this challenging period, this is also a time and opportunity for radical innovation towards a more sustainable path of our industries.

In an interconnected world, young professionals are faced with serious complex technological, social and environmental transitions that require immediate action within and across borders. In order to make sure that they are ready and able to face these challenges on a local, (EU) regional, (inter)national and intercultural professional level, it is imperative that they develop their global competences.

Many innovations are dependent on materials. The wide variety of ways in which materials can be applied requires them to have a broad palette of characteristics. Plastics with suitable characteristics for specific applications can be produced with the correct design, synthesis, and processing of molecules. With the depletion of raw fossil fuels and the effects of emissions on the climate, there is increased pressure to produce materials in a more responsible and conscious way.

An increasing number of people have overweight, are obese or have (a higher risk of developing) chronic diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, lung diseases and chronic pain. In addition, many people have difficulty achieving and maintaining a healthy active lifestyle. The current shift in healthcare also implies that people take more responsibility for their own health.

The Research Centre for Professional Communication in a Digitalizing Society conducts research into the impact of digitalization on professional communication in various professional domains.

The Research Center for Smart Urban Redesign aims to improve liveability, life quality and wellbeing in neighbourhoods using technical and non-technical solutions for the definition and development of the Limburg region future identity.

The special research centre Sustainable Energy in the Built Environment was created in 2009 through a cooperation between TNO and Zuyd University. From this period TNO and Zuyd are working together on the development of new products for sustainable energy in the built environment. Zuyd concentrates on the demonstration and validation of the developed products.
