Dutch study finance

If you are preparing to study in the Netherlands it's important to plan how you will manage your budget during your studies. Many international students explore Dutch study finance to help cover tuition fees and living expenses while studying abroad.

What is Dutch student finance?

It is financial support provided by the Dutch government to help students pay for education and daily costs. This support is managed by DUO and may include a tuition fee loan Netherlands offers, a supplementary grant, and a travel product for public transport. Using study finance can help you focus on your studies without worrying about your finances.

If you are an EU/EEA or Swiss student, you may be eligible for Dutch study finance if you:

  • work at least 56 hours per month in the Netherlands,
  • have lived in the Netherlands for five consecutive years,
  • or have a residence permit that qualifies you for support.

If you are a non-EU/EEA student, you will generally not be eligible unless you meet specific residence conditions.

Tuition fee loan Netherlands

If you do not qualify for full Dutch study finance, you may still be eligible for a tuition fee loan Netherlands offers. This can help you pay your tuition fees while studying, and is often available for EU/EEA students in the Netherlands.

How does the system work?

If you qualify, you can borrow an amount for living expenses and tuition fees. The supplementary grant is income-based and may become a gift if you complete your degree within ten years. If you receive a loan, you will repay it after your studies with low monthly payments, depending on your income, over a period of up to 35 years.

Managing your finances

You may also consider looking for scholarships and grants that may help reduce your study costs. It is wise to calculate your living expenses in advance, including housing, food, insurance, and transportation, so you can plan your budget properly during your stay.

If you have questions, the Zuyd International Office is ready to support you. You can also visit the DUO website for detailed information and tools to help you calculate how much you can borrow and what your repayments will look like after graduation.
