Studying as an Italian student in the Netherlands
Italian student
The Netherlands is a popular destination for international students, thanks to its high-quality teaching, hands-on learning, and open, international study culture. It’s a great place to meet people from all over the world.
University of Applied Sciences
In the Netherlands, you can choose between a research university and a University of Applied Sciences (HBO). Zuyd is a University of Applied Sciences, meaning our programmes are more practice-oriented, with a strong focus on internships and real-world projects that prepare you for the job market.
At Zuyd, around 11% of our 13,000 students come from abroad. We’re known for personal guidance, small-scale teaching, and a supportive learning environment. You’ll learn from experienced lecturers and apply your knowledge immediately through practical assignments. Studying in an international student city like Maastricht means you’ll feel at home quickly, in a welcoming and dynamic environment.
Why study in the Netherlands?
-
Study in English
Many programmes in the Netherlands are taught entirely in English – no need to speak Dutch to study here. Most Dutch people also speak excellent English, making everyday life much easier.
-
Practice-based learning
At Dutch Universities of Applied Sciences, you’ll combine theory with practice. You’ll work on projects with companies and study in small groups with plenty of contact with lecturers and fellow students.
-
An international and diverse environment
Maastricht is a real student city with a vibrant international atmosphere. You’ll meet people from around the world, explore new cultures, and enjoy the city’s many cafés, restaurants, and shops.
-
Differences from studying in Italy
The Dutch education system is more interactive and hands-on than in Italy. There’s less hierarchy between students and teachers, which makes it easier to ask questions and collaborate.
-
Personalised guidance
At Zuyd, you’ll receive personalised guidance and study in small groups. You’ll work on group projects and learn from lecturers with real-world experience. That’s one of the reasons Zuyd consistently ranks among the top Universities of Applied Sciences in the Netherlands.
