Living and working in the Netherlands

Many Bulgarian students combine their studies with a part-time job. As an EU citizen, you do not need a work permit. However, you may need to take out Dutch health insurance if you work. Common student jobs are in hospitality, retail, and roles at the university.

You’ll need around €800 to €1,200 per month to cover your living expenses in Holland, including rent, food, and transport. Want to save money? Buy a second-hand bicycle! Maastricht is a bike-friendly city and many students use their bike to get around.

Public transport is well organised. With an OV card, you’ll get discounts on buses and trains. But thanks to Maastricht’s compact size, most things are within walking or cycling distance.

Maastricht is known for its lively student scene. With countless cafés, restaurants and cultural events, there’s always something to do. You’ll quickly meet new people through student associations and international activities.
