Transport
Getting to maastricht
You don’t really need a car to get around here. Most people use bikes or use public transport, easy, affordable, and gets you pretty much anywhere.
Hop on a bike
In the Netherlands, everyone cycles, students, professionals, even the prime minister! As a newcomer, it might take a little practice in busy traffic, but you’ll get used to it quickly. Second-hand bikes are easy to find, and if you sell yours when you leave, you’ll save a lot of money. Just make sure you get a solid lock, bikes tend to "go missing" now and then.
Also, avoid fines by making sure your bike has proper lights, especially in winter when it gets dark early. And don’t forget: using your phone while cycling (unless hands-free) can get you a hefty fine too. Better safe than sorry!
Public transport
Trains and buses run smoothly and on time. You’ll need an OV-chipkaart to travel, and with it, you can go almost anywhere. For routes and schedules, check 9292.nl, super handy!
Thinking of bringing a car?
You can use your EU driving licence here, but if you’re staying longer than 3 months, make sure you’re officially registered. After a year, you might need to switch to a Dutch licence. Also check if you’ll need an international permit for your trip to the Netherlands. Oh, and don’t forget to check your insurance. Healthcare and car costs can be high here.
You can park at most of our campuses for a max of €1.15 a day. Public parking can be limited ad pricey.
