Dutch language at Zuyd
No Dutch? No Problem!
Don’t worry about the language, you’ll be just fine at Zuyd, even if you don’t speak Dutch! At Zuyd, we want you to feel comfortable and supported from the moment you arrive. All our English-taught programmes are designed for international students like you, so you don’t need to worry about speaking Dutch for your studies. All classes, assignments, and exams will be in English, and you'll be surrounded by an international community of students and staff.
In daily life, English is spoken almost everywhere in the Netherlands, so getting around is easy. But if you’d like to immerse yourself a little more in the local culture, learning some Dutch can make things even more enjoyable. It’s a fun way to connect with people, understand the culture better, and get the most out of your time here.
Prepare at home
The best way to learn the language is by taking Dutch classes in your own country and then spending a vacation in the Netherlands before your internship or study begins. The Dutch embassy in your country should be able to tell you where you can follow Dutch language classes. If you follow these up with advanced lessons alongside your study or work in the Netherlands, you should be able to express yourself fairly quickly.
Learning Dutch in the Netherlands
Of course you can also learn Dutch after your arrival in the Netherlands, for example in a Dutch course offered by the University of Maastricht. It will help you get started with the basics, or even become more fluent!
Studying in Dutch
If you choose to study one of our Dutch-taught programmes, you'll need to have a good command of the Dutch language. To make sure that you can attend study programmes taught in Dutch, you have to attain the NT2-level II. The NT2-level II exam is a State Examination. If you have no prior knowledge of Dutch at all, it will take you about a year to prepare for the NT2-level II exam.
