Opening a bank account in the Netherlands

Bank account

Once you arrive in the Netherlands, you might want to open a local bank account. It makes everyday life much easier, especially when it comes to paying in shops, supermarkets or restaurants, where Dutch bank cards are widely accepted.

What you'll need 

To open a bank account as an international student, you’ll need: 

  • Proof of Enrolment (downloadable via Osiris)
  • Dutch BSN number (burgerservicenummer; Citizen Service Number)   

You will receive your BSN number about 4 weeks after registering with the local municipality in the Personal Records Database (BRP).  

Don’t have your BSN yet? No problem, some banks will let you open an account first and submit your BSN later.

Using your cards

If your home bank card works with Cirrus or Maestro network, you can withdraw cash at ATMs across the Netherlands. Make sure you know your PIN code.  
 
Good to know: Most Dutch shops prefer payment by bank card. Credit cards are accepted in some places, but not everywhere, so having a local bank account helps a lot.
